High School U16’s v Biggar

The High School U16’s travelled to Biggar for their 2nd round tie in the Scottish Schools competition and came away with a hard earned 21-17 victory.

Hawick always knew this would be a tough test against a Biggar side currently riding high in their respective Conference Division. Two evenly matched sides gave everything they had for 70 minutes, with the result hanging in the balance right to the death.

Both sides managed 3 tries a piece on the day, however ultimately it was the accurate boot of Hawick’s James Delaney (stepping up from the U15’s) who proved to be the difference with 3 successful conversions, two from out wide, whereas Biggar only managed 1.

Whilst it must be said this was not one of Hawick’s best performances, the determination shown by the whole squad kept them in the game, particulaly in the latter stages when the significanly larger Biggar players were throwing the “kitchen sink” at the Hawick boys. Biggar could actually have clinched a late victory had it not been for a “bone-crunching” touch-line tackle from full-back Mully Bannerman, when it looked as though the Biggar winger, who was in full flight, must score.

Try scorrers for Hawick were Andrew Mitchell and Mully Bannerman (2), with the boot of James Delaney securing all the extras.
