Burns is remembered at the High School

Four students from Hawick High School have recently participated in the National Burns Competition.

Having got through the Border heats in March; Euan Welsh, Calum Garden, Jasmyn Davidson and Robert Scott; headed up to Glasgow to compete against the best Burns  reciters and singers in the country.  Jasmyn, singing ‘Ae Fond Kiss’ was complemented on her pitch and tone whilst the sound of Calum’s  bagpipes filled the hall. Euan got a very acceptable fourth place having won the National P6/7 competition last year. However, it was Robert who was the most successful when he came first in the S5/6 category with his recitation of ‘Tam o’ Shanter’. Moreover, the border team (which included students from Jed Grammar and Berwickshire High) were one point short of winning the Team Award.

Hawick High School is setting up a club for budding Burn’s reciters. Davy Scott, a past national champion,  is coming to the school to train pupils’ in the art of reciting the Baird’s poetry. The aim is to repeat this years success and provide the area with high quality performers at Burn’s Suppers for years to come.
