Charles ‘Chuck’ Whillans

Charles ‘Chuck’ Whillans was born on Christmas Day 1923 – hence his middle name. He spent 3 years at Hawick High School. His favourite teacher was Mr. Kay (P.E.). His pals at school were Peter Deans (Colin Deans’s father) and Eck Henderson. At Hawick High School his ambitions were to be a golfer or a rugby player. The Navy wouldn’t accept him because of his colour blindness. Chuck is mainly known for being Hawick’s oldest living Cornet. He carried the flag in 1948 and was Acting Father to Cornet George Peden in 1967. He established the retail business of C N Whillans Knitwear. His other interests are rugby, golf and horses.
